Halfmoon Fishing Guide
Halfmoon are distinctive blue-black sea chub named for the crescent shape of their tail, commonly called "Blue Perch" on Southern California party boats where they appear as a frequent bycatch in kelp and rocky reef areas. While not large, they school densely and provide fast-paced action on small baits, and their mild white flesh is perfectly edible if less prized than other species.
Halfmoon is a saltwater species.
Habitat
Rocky reefs, kelp forests, and nearshore structure from Point Conception south through Baja California at depths of 5 to 130 feet.
Diet
Algae, small invertebrates, and zooplankton near rocky structure and kelp.
Fishing Techniques
- Small hooks with cut squid or anchovy near structure
- Sabiki rigs in kelp areas
- Small crustacean baits on light line
- Micro jigs and small metal lures
